Día de Muertos en Vannucchi Art Studio.
Death is democratic, because, at the end of the day, whether you are blonde, dark-skinned, rich or
poor, everyone ends up being a skull,” said cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada, referring to his most
famous character, La Catrina.
According to legend, La Catrina’s origin is the Aztec figure Mictecacihuatl, the goddess of death. In the legend, the Aztec
goddess of death kept the bones of the dead, since they could be used at some point. The goddess saved them so that, if they
were needed, they could be used This character comes back to life as an iconic figure that goes hand in hand with the Day of the
Dead, and dresses in a very fine way.
La Catrina, as a popular symbol of death, was named as such by the muralist Diego Rivera (1886-1957), but he was not the first
to include her in his works, since José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) was the precursor of this representation. La Catrina was
initially known as “La Calavera Garbancera” (The Garbancera Skull), after the title Posada gave to the engraving depicting a
woman in very fine attire, and drawings that mocked the most privileged classes of Mexico.
The garbancero was someone who,
despite having indigenous blood, pretended to be European and denied his own culture. They were also called malinchistas.
Posada was a social critic and in his works the artist portrayed the injustice that existed during the Porfiriato, a time when
President Porfirio Díaz was in the same position for up to three decades before the Mexican Revolution took place. Over time, the
figure of La Catrina endured as a symbol of protest and since then it has been added to Day of the Dead celebrations on altars
while many dress up as catrinas and catrines.
